St. Mary's City, Md. - Junior forward
Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) tallied a
game-high 21 points as the visiting Wolverines of Wesley College
posted a 67-60 Capital Athletic Conference victory Saturday
afternoon over the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
basketball team in the regular season finale for both squads.
Thomas shot 50.0 percent from the floor,
including going 5-of-9 from downtown, to pace the Wolverine
offense, while sophomore forward Angie Owens
(Seaford, Del./Seaford) notched a double-double on 13 points and a
game-high 12 boards. Sophomore guard Cory
Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) added 10.
Wesley (14-11, 10-6 CAC) controlled the first 20 minutes,
opening up the contest on a 9-0 run behind five points from
Thomas. The Seahawks (9-16, 6-10 CAC) erased
the nine-point deficit with a 24-13 run to earn their first lead of
the game at 3:36 (24-22) as senior forward Kiely
Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) capped the run with a
three-pointer.
The Wolverines closed out the half on a 9-6 run to own a 31-30
advantage at intermission as Owens and sophomore
Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) each
had eight first-half points. Murphy and
sophomore guard Jamie Roberts (Rockville,
Md./Barrie) led the Seahawks at the half with eight points each.
St. Mary's pulled ahead in the second half, 52-43, at the
9:48-minute mark following a lay-up by sophomore center
Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) but four
consecutive baskets (including back-to-back three-pointers) by
Thomas quickly wiped out that lead and the game
was tied at 56-56 with 6:02 remaining.
Thomas struck again with her fifth trey of the
game at 5:48 and that was all the momentum that Wesley needed as
the Wolverines ended the game on an 11-4 run.
Murphy and senior forward Allie
Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) paced the Seahawks with 14
points and six rebounds apiece, while Hurte
finished with a dozen points and five caroms.
Murphy was 5-of-7 from the floor, connecting on a
season-best four three-pointers.
As the sixth seed in the 2009 CAC Women's Basketball Tournament,
the Seahawks will travel to Fredericksburg, Va. on Tuesday,
February 21 to take on third-seeded University of Mary Washington
in CAC quarterfinal action at 6:00.
