St. Mary's City, Md. - A balanced attack led
the 18th-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse
team to a dominant 24-5 victory over the visiting Wolverines of
Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action Tuesday
afternoon.
Junior attacker Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville,
Md./North Harford) paced the Seahawk offense with six points on
three goals and three assists, while senior midfielder
Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill)
registered four goals on the afternoon.
Wesley (0-2, 0-2 CAC) opened up the contest an early 2-0 lead at
27:06 with two goals in a 48-second span as senior midfielder
Jade Martin (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May
Regional) and freshman attacker Katelyn Randes
(Odenton, Md./Arundel) both found the back of the net.
St. Mary's (1-1, 1-0 CAC) went on to unleash nine unanswered
goals to claim a 9-2 lead at 12:46. Carrier

St. Mary's closed out the first half on a 6-0 run for a 15-3
halftime lead.
St. Mary's kicked off the second half with three more goals
before sophomore midfielder Stephanie Bailey
(Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) found the back of the net for the
Wolverines at 18:50. Junior attacker Nora
Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.])
scored two of the home team's next three goals before
Randes tallied her second of the day.
Sophomore attacker Maggie Macleay (Annapolis,
Md./St. Mary's Ryken) scored twice in 15 seconds to finish off the
game's scoring.
Carrier is just two games away from setting the
NCAA Division III women's lacrosse record for consecutive games
with at least one goal. She came into the season needing to
score at least one goal in her first four games of 2009. With
today's performance, Carrier extended her streak
of consecutive games with at least one goal to 44 straight.
She started the streak as a freshman on April 15, 2006 with
one goal and one assist in a 10-9 loss to Mary Washington.
The NCAA Division III record is 45 consecutive games set by
Liz Baumbach of the University of Scranton from
2001 to 2003.
The Seahawks controlled the game from start to finish, winning
22 of 31 draw controls as Fallon-Oben had a
game-high five and edging the visitors 31 to 23 on ground balls as
Mirkin scooped up a game-high four. The home
team fired off 41 shots to Wesley's 11.
Freshman goalies Colleen Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) and Colleen Gradowski (Bethesda,
Md./Walter Johnson) split equal time in goal for the Seahawks,
combining for five stops. Sophomore Farryn
Kauffman (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) turned away 11 shots
in the loss.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday, February 28
when St. Mary's hosts No. 15 Dickinson College in non-conference
action at Seahawk Stadium at 1:00.
