St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior midfielders
Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) and
Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) both
recorded a hat trick to combine for 60% of the Seahawks' scoring
output as the No. 18 St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
lacrosse team notched a 10-5 non-conference victory over No. 15
Dickinson College Saturday afternoon.
With her three-goal performance today, Carrier
tied the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse record for consecutive
games with at least one goal with 45 games in a row. She
started the streak as a freshman on April 15, 2006 with one goal
and one assist in a 10-9 loss to Mary Washington. The NCAA
Division III record of 45 consecutive games was originally set by
Liz Baumbach of the University of Scranton from
2001 to 2003.
Junior midfielder Caitlin Nichols (Baltimore,
Md./McDonogh) notched three points as well for the Seahawks (2-1)
with two goals and an assist, while junior attacker Kelsey
Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) dished out two
assists.
The two teams alternated the first four goals of the game as the
contest was tied 2-2 at 21:29 as Zerhusen scored
twice for St. Mary's and junior Lexie Kob
(Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) netted both for Dickinson (0-1).
Then St. Mary's registered the next three goals to boast a 5-2
advantage at 15:08 before junior attacker Blair
Thompson (Portsmouth, N.H./Holderness) stopped the run
with an unassisted tally at 13:39. The Seahawks closed out
the first half on a 3-0 run to lead 8-3 at halftime.
Senior attacker Emily Norris (Timonium,
Md./Dulaney) extended St. Mary's run to 4-0 as
Norris completed a pass from
Branch just 1:10 into the start of the second
half. Thompson struck for her second of the
day at 22:05 for a 9-4 game. Scoring remained stalled until
the 3:58-minute mark when Carrier notched her
third goal. Junior attacker Abby Larson
(Easton, Md./Gunston Day) picked up the final score for Dickinson
on a free position shot at 3:19.
St. Mary's edged the Red Devils, 26-23, in shots, while the
Seahawks posted a 26-20 margin in ground balls behind a game-high
seven from junior defender Karisa Carroll (Long
Island, N.Y./Ward Melville). However, Dickinson controlled
the draws with a 12-5 advantage as Larson won a
game-best four.
Freshman goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) turned away seven shots in the Seahawk win, while
sophomore Jessie Clark (Devon, Pa./Conestoga)
recorded 11 saves in the loss.
The Seahawks will be back in action next Wednesday, March 4 when
St. Mary's hosts Washington (Md.) College in non-conference action
at Seahawk Stadium at 4:00.
