St. Mary's City, Md. - An 8-0 run in the second
half helped the 15th-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
lacrosse team overcome a two-goal deficit to notch a 14-9
non-conference victory over Roanoke College Tuesday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville,
Md./Old Mill) tallied six goals and a helper in extending her NCAA
Division III record for consecutive games with at least one goal to
48 straight. Carrier started the streak as a
freshman on April 15, 2006 with one goal in a 10-9 loss to the
University of Mary Washington. Sophomore midfielder
Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) added four
points on two goals and two assists, while midfielders
Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) and
Caitlin Nichols (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) each
notched two goals.
Roanoke (3-2) led the entire first half as the Maroons started
with three unanswered goals before Carrier put the
Seahawks on the board with an unassisted goal at 17:55.
Junior attacker Sunni Ray (Severna Park,
Md./Severn) returned RC's three-goal cushion at 16:22 then the
teams traded the next two goals before back-to-back goals by
Carrier cut the Maroons' lead to 5-4 at
9:58. A free position goal by each squad made the halftime
score 6-5 in Roanoke's favor.
Two goals by junior midfielder Gina Valles
(South Windsor, Conn./Westminster) pushed the Maroons' lead to 8-6
at 28:06. Then Zerhusen sparked St. Mary's
8-0 run at 26:18 as she completed a pass from senior attacker
Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney). Junior
attacker Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St.
John's [D.C.]) scored the Seahawks' final goal at 10:48, while
Valles found the back of the net at 4:16 on a free
position shot for Roanoke's final tally of the game.
Valles finished the afternoon with four goals
and an assist, while junior attacker Brooks
Laufman (Annapolis, Md./Severn) contributed two scores and
a helper for the Maroons.
St. Mary's (5-1) captured 17 of 25 draw controls, including a
10-3 advantage in the second half, as Mirkin
grabbed a game-high four draws, while the Seahawks out-shot
Roanoke, 30-26.
The Maroons edged St. Mary's in ground balls, 19-17, as senior
goalie Katlyn Scarlett (Reisterstown, Md./St.
Paul's School for Girls) picked up a game-high four.
Scarlett finished with 12 saves in the loss.
Freshman goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) picked up 11 stops in the Seahawk win.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday, March 14 when
St. Mary's travels to Virginia Beach to take on Virginia Wesleyan
College in non-conference action at 3:30.
