Washington, D.C. - The
13th-ranked Catholic University women's lacrosse team extended its
win streak to five games in a row as the Cardinals notched a 16-11
victory over No. 16 St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday
afternoon in non-conference action.
Junior attacker Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai,
N.Y./Mt. Sinai) and freshman Katie Miller
(Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) paced the Cardinal offense with
three goals apiece, while junior midfielder Kate
Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) tallied a game-high
six points on two goals and four assists.
St. Mary's (6-2) struck first at 24:19 as junior attacker
Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's
College [D.C.]) converted a feed from senior midfielder
Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park). The
Cardinals then responded with a pair to claim a short-lived 2-1
advantage at 20:32. The Seahawks notched three in a row to
regain the lead before Catholic answered with two to knot the game
at 4-all at 11:57. A pair of St. Mary's goals sandwiched a
Miller goal for the visitors' last lead at 7:53
(6-5).
Robinson initiated a 5-0 run that carried into
the second half as the Cardinals (5-2) posted a 7-6 halftime
advantage. The home team staked a 10-6 lead with 25:07 left
in the game as sophomore attacker Katie
Buonpastore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) scored twice
in the 5-0 run.
The Seahawks came within 10-8 at 23:38 following goals by senior
attacker Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) and
sophomore midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton,
Md./Sherwood) but St. Mary's would get no closer as Catholic closed
out the game on a 6-3 run.
Senior midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville,
Md./Old Mill) led the Seahawks and all scorers with four goals as
Carrier finished the afternoon with six points,
dishing out two helpers as well. Today's performance extends
her NCAA Division III record for consecutive games with at least
one goal to 50 straight. She started the streak as a freshman
on April 15, 2006 in a loss to the University of Mary Washington.
The Cardinals took 33 shots to St. Mary's 26, while claiming 38
ground balls to the visitors' 23. Catholic also dominated the
draw controls, 17 to 8 as freshman midfielder Mary
Swarthout (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) grabbed a
game-high five draws. Swarthout also scooped
up a game-high nine loose balls.
Junior Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh,
Pa./Oakland Catholic) recorded 10 saves in the win, while freshman
Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) turned
away 11 shots for the Seahawks.
St. Mary's continues its seven-game road trip in York,
Pennsylvania as the Seahawks return to Capital Athletic Conference
action at York College this Saturday at noon.
