Fredericksburg, Va. - Draw
control dominance by the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
lacrosse team and a game-high five goals by senior midfielder
Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill)
propelled the No. 17 Seahawks to a 14-11 Capital Athletic
Conference victory over No. 19 University of Mary Washington on a
cold, rainy Thursday afternoon.
St. Mary's (9-2, 4-0 CAC) broke a 7-7 halftime tie with a 7-4
run in the second half as the Seahawks won 10 of 13 draw controls
in the final 30 minutes to finish with a 19-8 advantage for the
game. Senior attacker Emily Norris
(Timonium, Md./Dulaney) grabbed a career- and game-high six draw
controls.
Carrier matched her season-high of seven points
with five goals and two assists, while junior attacker Nora
Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.])
notched two goals and an assist. Midfielders Allie
Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) and Nikki
Yesalavage (Cranbury, N.J./The Peddie School) each tallied
two goals for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks outscored Mary Washington 3-2 in the game's first
10 minutes before the Eagles' freshman midfielder Catherine
Kennedy (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) netted
back-to-back goals to give her squad a 4-3 lead at 15:48.
Carrier knotted the game at 4-all at 15:03 before
two consecutive goals by sophomore attacker Katie
Wallis (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Creek) provided UMW with a
two-goal lead at 12:47. St. Mary's then scored three of the
half's final four goals, including a buzzer-beater by
Zerhusen, for the 7-7 halftime draw.
Mary Washington's freshman midfielder Allie
Kimmelman (Burke, Va./Robinson) notched the first goal of
the second half at 25:03 before the Seahawks went on a 4-0 run for
an 11-8 lead at 17:53. Kennedy struck again
with two goals in a row to bring the Eagles within one at
6:49. After an unassisted tally by Kimmelman
at 4:43, UMW was still down one goal before
Zerhusen and Yesalavage sealed
the win with back-to-back goals in a one-minute span.
Kennedy finished the afternoon with four goals
to pace the Eagles (7-4, 3-1 CAC), while Wallis
had a hat trick and an assist. Kimmelman
contributed two goals and an assist.
Mary Washington edged the Seahawks in shots (27-26) and ground
balls (33-32) following a game-high six ground ball pick ups by
senior midfielder Emily Gallugi (S. Windsor,
Conn./S. Windsor).
Carrier's performance today keeps the streak
alive as she extended her NCAA Division III record for consecutive
games with at least one goal to 53 straight. She started the
streak as a freshman on April 15, 2006 in a loss to Mary
Washington.
Freshman Colleen Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) made 11 saves in the win, while freshman
Danni Guigli (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) had six
stops for Mary Washington.
Five down, two left on St. Mary's seven-game road trip.
The Seahawks will return to action this Sunday in Ewing, N.J. with
a non-conference match-up against No. 4 The College of New Jersey
at 1:00.
