No. 17 Seahawks Get by No. 19 Mary Washington

Box Score

Fredericksburg, Va. - Draw control dominance by the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team and a game-high five goals by senior midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) propelled the No. 17 Seahawks to a 14-11 Capital Athletic Conference victory over No. 19 University of Mary Washington on a cold, rainy Thursday afternoon.

St. Mary's (9-2, 4-0 CAC) broke a 7-7 halftime tie with a 7-4 run in the second half as the Seahawks won 10 of 13 draw controls in the final 30 minutes to finish with a 19-8 advantage for the game.  Senior attacker Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) grabbed a career- and game-high six draw controls.

Carrier matched her season-high of seven points with five goals and two assists, while junior attacker Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) notched two goals and an assist.  Midfielders Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) and Nikki Yesalavage (Cranbury, N.J./The Peddie School) each tallied two goals for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks outscored Mary Washington 3-2 in the game's first 10 minutes before the Eagles' freshman midfielder Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) netted back-to-back goals to give her squad a 4-3 lead at 15:48.  Carrier knotted the game at 4-all at 15:03 before two consecutive goals by sophomore attacker Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Creek) provided UMW with a two-goal lead at 12:47.  St. Mary's then scored three of the half's final four goals, including a buzzer-beater by Zerhusen, for the 7-7 halftime draw.

Mary Washington's freshman midfielder Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va./Robinson) notched the first goal of the second half at 25:03 before the Seahawks went on a 4-0 run for an 11-8 lead at 17:53.  Kennedy struck again with two goals in a row to bring the Eagles within one at 6:49.  After an unassisted tally by Kimmelman at 4:43, UMW was still down one goal before Zerhusen and Yesalavage sealed the win with back-to-back goals in a one-minute span.

Kennedy finished the afternoon with four goals to pace the Eagles (7-4, 3-1 CAC), while Wallis had a hat trick and an assist.  Kimmelman contributed two goals and an assist.

Mary Washington edged the Seahawks in shots (27-26) and ground balls (33-32) following a game-high six ground ball pick ups by senior midfielder Emily Gallugi (S. Windsor, Conn./S. Windsor).

Carrier's performance today keeps the streak alive as she extended her NCAA Division III record for consecutive games with at least one goal to 53 straight.  She started the streak as a freshman on April 15, 2006 in a loss to Mary Washington.

Freshman Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made 11 saves in the win, while freshman Danni Guigli (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) had six stops for Mary Washington.

Five down, two left on St. Mary's seven-game road trip.  The Seahawks will return to action this Sunday in Ewing, N.J. with a non-conference match-up against No. 4 The College of New Jersey at 1:00.
