Annapolis, Md. - Senior
midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old
Mill) set the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse record for
consecutive games with at least one goal Thursday night as St.
Mary's College of Maryland notched a 17-10 non-conference victory
over Washington (Md.) College at Lawrence E. Knight Stadium on the
grounds of Broadneck High School.
The new NCAA mark is 46 consecutive games with at least one goal
as Carrier surpassed the old mark of 45 set by
Liz Baumbach of the University of Scranton from March 28,
2001 to May 10, 2003. Carrier started the
streak as a freshman on April 15, 2006 with one goal and one assist
in a 10-9 loss to the University of Mary Washington.
Senior midfielder Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville,
Md./Park) led the Seahawks (3-1) in the victory with a career-best
six goals, while senior attacker Emily Norris
(Timonium, Md./Dulaney) added four goals and an assist.
Carrier finished the contest with three goals,
while junior attacker Kelsey Branch
(Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) dished out three assists.
Washington (1-1) scored first as senior Suzie
Jakub (University Park, Md.) completed an assist from
sophomore Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, Md.) at
27:44. St. Mary's then rattled off three unanswered goals to
claim a 3-1 lead at 23:16. Senior Brittany
Lambert's (Riva, Md.) unassisted goal at 8:32 pulled the
Shorewomen within 4-3, the closest they would get the rest of the
way.
The contest's ninth goal gave Carrier the NCAA
record as she took a feed from Branch at 5:28 to
give the Seahawks a 6-3 halftime lead.
St. Mary's started the second half with two goals before scoring
six straight, including a pair from Zerhusen and
two from Carrier, in just over eight minutes to
put the game away, 15-5, at 9:05. The Shorewomen rallied with
three straight in less than three minutes but they could not
overcome the deficit in time.
Jakub led Washington with five goals, while
Cannon contributed a goal and three assists.
Lambert notched a hat trick, while sophomore
Sam Ohrem (Ridgefield, Conn.) had two assists.
St. Mary's edged the Shorewomen, 20-18, in ground balls as
junior defender Karisa Carroll (Long Island,
N.Y./Ward Melville) scooped up a game-high five loose balls.
The Seahawks also won 17 of 29 draw controls as
Zerhusen grabbed five. St. Mary's was 7-of-9
on free position shots, while Washington outshot SMCM, 31-24.
Freshman goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) recorded a season-high 14 saves, including nine in
the first half. Sophomore Amber Madore
(Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) gave up 12 goals in 47 minutes with four
saves.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Sunday, March 8 when
St. Mary's hosts McDaniel College in non-conference action at
Seahawk Stadium at 1:00 for Pink Out Day - the inaugural
Breast Cancer Awareness Lacrosse Game. Remember that Sunday
is daylight savings time so spring your clocks an hour ahead.
