St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior midfielder
Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) netted the
game-winner with 28 seconds left in regulation to give the
15th-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team an
11-10 non-conference victory over McDaniel College Sunday
afternoon.
Taking a feed from junior attacker Kelsey
Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford),
Zerhusen beat junior goalie Leanne
Hollinger (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) with her shot to
the top left corner for the Seahawks' fourth straight win.
Zerhusen led the Seahawks with three goals and
an assist, while senior midfielder Lauren Carrier
(Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) tallied a hat trick to extend her NCAA
Division III record for consecutive games with at least one goal to
47 games in a row. Carrier started the
streak as a freshman on April 15, 2006 with one goal and one assist
in a 10-9 loss to the University of Mary Washington.
The Green Terror (2-1) struck first at 25:50 behind senior
midfielder Steph Sudbrook's (Baltimore, Md./Loch
Raven) first goal of the season before St. Mary's went on a 3-0 run
for a 3-1 lead at 14:11. Carrier's free
position goal at 9:11 gave the Seahawks a two-goal cushion (4-2)
before back-to-back goals by junior Brittany Baer
(Westminster, Md./Westminster) and one by senior midfielder
Kristin Mele (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) put
McDaniel ahead 5-4 at 6:53. Zerhusen knotted
the game at 5-all at halftime with her free position goal at 1:01.
Branch scored her fourth of the season to put
the Seahawks (4-1) back on top at the second half but McDaniel
posted a 3-0 run to claim an 8-6 advantage at 17:39. Then
back-to-back goals by Baer provided a three-goal
(10-7) cushion for the Green Terror at 14:17. Senior attacker
Emily Norris' (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) free
position goal at 8:05 followed by Zerhusen's
unassisted goal at 6:37 cut the deficit to 10-9.
Carrier launched a rocket whizzing past
Hollinger's head for a 10-10 draw at 2:34.
Baer notched a game-high five goals and six
points in leading the McDaniel offense, while senior attacker
Lindsey McDonald (Germantown, Md./Damascus) dished
out three assists.
McDaniel edged the Seahawks in both shots (26-24) and draw
controls (12-11) behind a game-high five draw controls by
Baer. St. Mary's registered a 23-19
advantage in ground balls as junior defender Karisa
Carroll (Long Island, N.Y./Ward Melville) scooped up a
game-high four loose balls.
Freshman goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) made 10 stops in the Seahawk win, while
Hollinger finished with 12 saves for McDaniel.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Tuesday, March 10 when
St. Mary's hosts Roanoke College in non-conference action at
Seahawk Stadium at 4:30.
