St. Mary's City, Md. - With her five-goal,
one-assist performance Wednesday afternoon, senior midfielder
Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) became
the school's all-time leader in both goals and points as
Carrier led the St. Mary's College of Maryland
women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 non-conference victory over
Christopher Newport University on Senior Day.
For her career, Carrier now has 242 goals and
303 points, surpassing the old records of 241 goals and 298 points
set by Suzanne DeHaan '95.
The Seahawks' other two seniors also shined as midfielder
Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) and
attacker Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) both
contributed two goals and an assist.
St. Mary's returns to action April 21 as the No. 2 seed in the
Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Seahawks (12-4)
finished second in the league standings with a 6-1 record and were
rewarded with a first-round bye as the CAC Tournament kicks off
this Saturday with quarterfinal action. On Tuesday, St.
Mary's will host the winner of Saturday's match-up between No. 3
seed University of Mary Washington and No. 6 seed York (Pa.)
College. Tuesday's game time will be announced later.
St. Mary's stormed out of the gates with six unanswered goals,
including both of Norris' tallies, before
sophomore midfielder Mea Arnold (Manassas,
Va./Forest Park) finally put the Captains (9-5) on the board at
16:48 with an unassisted goal. The Seahawks outscored CNU,
5-4, in the final 13 minutes of the first half to boast an 11-5
halftime advantage.
Carrier's NCAA Division III record for
consecutive games with at least one goal has now reached 58
straight contests. She started the streak as a freshman on
April 15, 2006 in a loss to Mary Washington.
The Seahawks scored the first three goals of the second stanza
before CNU netted the game's final four goals, including a pair
from sophomore attacker Meghan Harkey
(Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley).
In her first career start as a Seahawk, sophomore attacker
Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken)
tallied two goals, while junior attacker Kelsey
Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) dished out a
season-high four assists.
St. Mary's outshot the Captains, 32-21, while dominating the
draw controls, 18-7. The Seahawks edged the visitors, 25-23,
in ground balls as sophomore defender Elisa
Bateman (Sparks, Md./Hereford) scooped up a game- and
career-high five loose balls.
CNU's leading scorer, Harkey led the Captains
with two goals and a helper, while freshman midfielder Liz
Klemens (Round Hills, Va./Loudoun Valley) added two goals
and senior midfielder Katie Doherty (Fairfax,
Va./Paul VI) dished out three assists.
Freshman Colleen Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) needed just five saves to pick up her 12th victory
between the pipes. Junior Gayle Robinson
(Reston, Va./South Lakes) made 10 stops in the loss.
