York, Pa. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland
women's basketball team overcame a four-point halftime deficit by
outscoring host York (Pa.) College, 40-31, in the second half as
the Seahawks nabbed their second straight win with a 64-59
come-from behind triumph over York in Capital Athletic Conference
Monday night.
Three players in double figures keyed the win for St. Mary's
(4-11, 3-4 CAC) with senior guard Stephanie
Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) leading the way
with her seventh double-double of the season.
Saint-Aubin notched game-highs of 18 points and 13
rebounds.
Freshman guard Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./W.
Springfield) added 17 off the bench of 5-of-9 shooting from
downtown, including 11 first-half points. Junior forward
Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) had 13
points on 9-of-12 shooting from the free throw line.
Another key factor in the Seahawk win was their dominance on the
glass as the visitors captured the rebounding battle, 42-28, and
notched 14 second-chance points off 19 offensive boards.
Saint-Aubin broke a 43-43 draw at 10:01 in the
second half with a layup and sparked a 16-9 run which junior guard
Megan Seeman (Frederick, Md./Linganore) capped off
with a three-pointer, giving St. Mary's its biggest lead of the
game - a six-point margin, 58-52.
Sophomore guard Khadija Mitchell (Bel Air,
Md./Mercy) closed the gap for the Spartans to 58-57 at 3:04 with
her third long-range shot of the game. But senior center
Alex Wenger's (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) jumper
at the other end cut short any hopes of a York rally as the
Seahawks secured the win with a 4-of-4 effort from the charity
stripe.
Mitchell paced the Spartans with 15 points
while juniors Caitlin Byrne (Westminster,
Md./Winter Mills) and April Sparkman
(Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) each tallied 11 off the bench.
In the first half, neither team lead by more than five points as
there were four ties in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Following Sham's third three-pointer, St. Mary's
owned a 24-22 with 2:20 remaining in the half before
Mitchell carried the Spartans to a 28-24 halftime
lead with four points in a 6-0 spurt.
The Seahawks continue their road trip on Wednesday, January 20
as St. Mary's travels to Frederick, Md. to take on Hood College in
another conference tilt at 6:00 pm. The game will be played
at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick.
