St. Mary's City, Md. - University of Mary
Washington and Marymount (Va.) University are the No. 1 and No. 2
seeds, respectively, in the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference
Women's Basketball Tournament, which begins tonight with first
round action at host institutions, No. 3 seed Wesley College and
No. 4 seed St. Mary's College of Maryland.
St. Mary's (9-15, 8-8 CAC) clinched the fourth seed in this
year's playoffs with its two-point win over York (Pa.) College this
past Saturday. With the loss, York settled for the No. 5 seed
and is making the return trip to the newly dedicated Michael P
O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for tonight's CAC
first round contest at 7:00 pm.
TICKETS:
Tickets for CAC tournament action are as follows: $6 - Adults and
Senior Citizens, $3 - Students. The St. Mary's athletic
department will be picking up the tab for all SMC students that
attend tonight's game as long as a valid SMC ID is shown.
The Seahawks swept the 2009-10 season series with YCP, claiming
a 64-59 victory at York's Charles Wolf Gymnasium on January 18 and
then notching a 61-59 triumph on February 20 behind senior guard
Stephanie Saint-Aubin's (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth
Seton) game-winning lay-up.
St. Mary's captured back-to-back CAC championship titles in 1998
and 1999, earning NCAA tournament berths both years. York has
never won a CAC crown but the Spartans claimed the 2008-09
conference regular-season title with an undefeated 16-0 CAC
mark. Finishing as the CAC runner-up last season, YCP claimed
an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA tournament and advanced to the
Sweet 16.
The three-time defending conference champion, No. 23/25 Mary
Washington (20-4 15-1 CAC) claimed the top seed by virtue of a coin
toss and will host the winner of the St. Mary's/York first-round
game Thursday night in the semifinals at 7:00 pm as the Eagles
earned a first-round bye.
Garnering a first-round bye as well, No. 7 Marymount (24-1, 15-1
CAC) will face the winner of the Wesley/Gallaudet first-round
match-up in Thursday's other semifinal contest at 7:00 pm.
