Seahawks Secure First Win of the Season

Box Score

Orlando, Fla. – Midfielders Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) and Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) each tallied four  points in leading St. Mary's College of Maryland to its first victory of the 2010 season in its second game of the day as the Seahawks (2-6) posted a 15-8 triumph over Kean University at Walt Disney's Wide World of Sports in Florida after dropping a 14-11 decision to Dickinson College just an hour before.

Fallon-Oben recorded a hat trick and an assist while Shackelford contributed a goal and three assists.  First-year midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) also notched a hat trick while attackers Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Remina Greenfield (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) and junior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) each picked up two goals apiece.

Kean (1-4) scored the first three goals of the game before Mirkin put the Seahawks (1-6) on the scoreboard off an assist by Shackelford at 21:05.  The Cougars tallied the next two goals before Mirkin and Greenfield cut the lead to 5-3 at halftime with the last two goals of the half.

First-year midfielder Lyndsey Cannon (Delran, N.J./Delran) paced Kean with a hat trick while senior defender Chelsea Davis (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and junior midfielder Erica Kelly (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) each added two goals apiece.

The second half was all about the Seahawks as St. Mary's rattled off 12 second-half goals, including the game's final seven to break an 8-8 tie following Cannon's last goal of the game at 13:30.

St. Mary's outshot the Cougars, 31-21, and captured the ground ball battle, 26-12 as first-year defender Natalie Hackstaff (Denver, Colo./St. Mary's Academy) picked up a game-high four.  The Seahawks also controlled the draws, 13-8, as Shackelford and Mirkin each won four.

Sophomore Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made seven saves in the second half in relief of first-year Katie Hammerer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) to pick of her win of the season.

Junior Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) made 11 stops in the loss.

St. Mary's will return to action next Tuesday, March 23 as the Seahawks host Virginia Wesleyan College in non-conference action at 4:00 pm in Seahawk Stadium.
