Box Score
Orlando, Fla. – In their first game of
the afternoon at Walt Disney's Wide World of Sports, the St.
Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team
suffered a 14-11 setback at the hands of Dickinson College
Wednesday as junior Kelsey Muir (Glen Mills,
Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) scored four times for the Red Devils.
Contributing to Dickinson's offense along with
Muir were midfielders Kaity Moore
(Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's) and Lucy
West (Bethesda, Md./Holton Arms) as each tallied three
goals while junior Sara Braniecki (Ocean City,
Md./Stephen Decatur) dished out three assists.
The Red Devils (3-1) scored the game's first two goals
before two from senior captain Nora Fallon-Oben
(Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) and one from
first-year midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis,
Md./Annapolis) put St. Mary's ahead 3-2. Dickinson
closed the first half by scoring five of the next six goals to
boast a 7-4 halftime advantage.
Fallon-Oben and first-year midfielder
Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) paced the
Seahawk scoring with two goals and two assists apiece while
sophomore attacker Melissa Mayer (Crofton,
Md./South River) added two goals.
The Seahawks (0-6) pulled within 8-7 in the second half as
Mayer notched her two goals of the afternoon and
sophomore midfielder Lauren Bennett (Frederick,
Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) found the back the net as well. That
would be the closest St. Mary's would come the rest of the
way as Dickinson rattled off five unanswered goals, including a
West hat trick, to stake its biggest lead of the
game – a 13-7 advantage. SMCM netted four of the final
five goals but were unable to close the gap in time.
St. Mary's outshot the Red Devils, 35-28, but the Red
Devils' junior Jessie Clark (Devon,
Pa./Conestoga) turned away 13 shots in 51 minutes while first-year
Amanda Morse (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had one
stop in the final minutes of the contest.
Dickinson controlled the draws, 17-10, as midfielders
Sunnie Ko (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and
Alysa Crellin (Little Compton, R.I./Portsmouth
Abbey) both had a game-high five while ground balls were dead even
at 24 apiece.
Seahawk junior Jamie Roberts (Rockville,
Md./Barrie) picked up 11 saves, three caused turnovers, and three
ground balls in the loss.
Still on its quest for its first win of the 2010 season, St.
Mary's will return to action later this afternoon when the
Seahawks face Kean University at 2:30 pm at Walt Disney's
Wide World of Sports.
