St. Mary's City, Md. – The No. 17
University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team notched
its third consecutive victory as sophomore midfielder
Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore
Lutheran) scored seven goals in leading Mary Washington to a 16-12
victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Tuesday afternoon
in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
Sophomore midfielder Allie Kimmelman (Burke,
Va./Robinson) tallied three goals and two assists as part of her
contribution to the Mary Washington (3-1, 1-0 CAC) offense while
junior attacker Katie Wallis (Cypress,
Texas/Cy-Creek) dished out four assists. First-year
midfielder Sarah Donatich (Melville, N.Y./Ward
Melville) also finished with four points on two goals and two
assists off the bench.
The Eagles opened up with four straight goals, including a pair
from Kennedy, before goals from first-year
midfielders Erin Shackelford (Annapolis,
Md./Annapolis) and Lauriann Parker (Woodbine,
Md./Glenelg) put St. Mary's on board at 17:58.
Kennedy spearheaded another 4-0 run with two more
goals to give her team an 8-2 advantage with 7:30 left in the half.
However, St. Mary's (0-4, 0-1 CAC) responded with a flurry
of goals to close the gap to within two and head into halftime down
only 8-6 as sophomore midfielder Lauren Bennett
(Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) scored twice in the 4-0 run.
Parker dominated the scoring for the Seahawks
with four goals and an assist while senior captain Nora
Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College
[D.C.]) added three points on two goals and an assist.
Bennett and junior midfielder Aubrey
Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) both finished with two goals
each.
Fallon-Oben and Parker both
pulled St. Mary's within one twice in the second half with
the last time coming at 23:23 as Parker picked up
an unassisted goal to make it 10-9. Mary Washington used a
5-1 run to distance themselves from the Seahawks, owning a 15-10
margin at 12:08.
Despite outhustling Mary Washington on draw controls, 19 to 11,
St. Mary's had trouble holding on to the ball and committed
35 turnovers for the game. Mirkin and
sophomore midfielder Laura Leigh Cooper
(Fruitland, Md./James Md. Bennett) each won four draws to pace the
home team.
Mary Washington edged the Seahawks in groundballs, 33 to 30, as
sophomore midfielder Jenny Atmar (Houston,
Texas/Bellaire) scooped up a game-high nine.
First-year goalie Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes,
Del./Cape Henlopen) recorded nine saves in the Eagle win while
Seahawk junior Jamie Roberts (Rockville,
Md./Barrie) turned away a career-high 16 shots.
St. Mary's will return to action Friday, March 12 as the
Seahawks face their fourth ranked opponent in No. The College of
New Jersey at home at 1:00 pm in Seahawk Stadium.
