Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team outlasted Wesley College in a slugfest as the Seahawks secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament with a 23-16 victory over Wesley Tuesday afternoon.
The Seahawks (7-7, 5-2 CAC) had three players notch five or more points with senior attacker Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) leading with way with nine on seven goals and two assists. First-year midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) was next with three goals and three assists while senior captain Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) added two goals and three assists. Three other players were multiple goal scorers for St. Mary's.
St. Mary's rolled out to a 6-0 lead before the Wolverines finally found the back of the net at 13:09 as sophomore defender Alyssa Prudente (Hereford, Md./Hereford) converted a free position shot. The Seahawks cruised to an 11-5 halftime lead as Fallon-Oben, junior attacker Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and sophomore midfielder Laura Leigh Cooper (Fruitland, Md./James M. Bennett) each scored twice.
First-year midfielder Jen Jacobs (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) led the Wesley offense with five goals while first-year midfielders Nina Cornog (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and Chelsea Buttacavoli (Brick, N.J./Marlboro) each recorded a hat trick.
Wesley (7-8, 1-6 CAC) was quite pesky in the second half, netting 11 second half goals to close a 10-goal deficit to 19-14 at 10:49 behind Jacobs' fifth tally. St. Mary's closed out the half on a 4-2 run to seal the win and lock up the No. 3 seed in the CAC tournament which begins this Saturday, April 17 with first round action.
St. Mary's outshot the Wolverines, 42-26, while edging them in ground balls 25 to 24. The Seahawks also claimed the draw control battle, 26-15.
Junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) started the game for the Seahawks, collecting three saves and two ground balls in the first half and picking up her fourth win of the season. First-year Katie Hammerer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) finished the second half with four ground balls and two stops.
First-year Alyssa Batty (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) turned away nine shots in 46 minutes of play for the loss while first-year Amanda Hudson (Frederica, Del./St. Thomas More) picked up three saves in the final 14 minutes.
The Seahawks will host sixth-seeded Marymount (Va.) University in CAC first round action this Saturday.
