Fredericksburg, Va. – Senior attacker
Brittany Butler (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow)
converted a free-position shot for the game-winning goal with 22
seconds remaining in the game to lift the No. 18 University of Mary
Washington Eagles to a 15-14 victory over St. Mary's College of
Maryland in the semifinals of the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference
Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
This is the third straight year that St. Mary's (8-8) has faced
Mary Washington (11-4) in the semifinals and the second consecutive
time that UMW has knocked the Seahawks out of contention. The
Eagles now advances to the CAC championship game for the second
year in a row and will face the winner of No. 2 Salisbury
University and No. 19 Stevenson University in Friday's title
contest.
The Seahawks outscored Mary Washington, 7-2, in the first 22
minutes of the second half, including rattling off six straight, to
overcome an 11-6 halftime deficit and to knot the contest at 13-all
with 7:38 left in the game.
Sophomore attacker Lauren Callison
(Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) returned the lead back to the
Eagles with an unassisted goal at 3:26 before junior midfielder
Aubrey
Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) completed a feed from
senior attacker Kelsey Branch
(Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and found the back of the net to
tie the game once more with 46 ticks on the clock.
Three players tallied five points for the Eagle offense as
sophomore midfielder Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore,
Md./Baltimore Lutheran) netted a game-high five goals while junior
attacker Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Creek)
notched four goals and an assist and sophomore midfielder
Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va./Robinson) finished
with two goals and three helpers.
St. Mary's opened up the game with a 2-0 lead before
Kennedy scored three times in a 1:19-minute span
to put the Eagles on top at 23:32. Mirkin
knotted the game at 22:18 before Mary Washington fired off five
straight goals, including a pair from Kimmelman
for an 8-3 advantage at 11:46. Each side scored three times
in the final 7:32 of the half for an 11-6 UMW halftime margin.
First-year midfielder Lauriann Parker
(Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) tallied six points (3g, 3a) while
Mirkin finished the afternoon with four
goals. Sophomore attacker Melissa Mayer
(Crofton, Md./South River) and first-year midfielder Erin
Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) each chipped in
two goals.
Mary Washington outshot the Seahawks, 31-22, while edging the
visitors, 24-23, in ground balls. The Eagles owned an 18-13
advantage in draw controls as Kennedy grabbed four
draws.
First-year Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes, Del./Cape
Henlopen) turned away six shots and had three ground balls in the
win while junior Jamie Roberts
(Rockville, Md./Barrie) had six saves as well and four loose ball
pick-ups for the Seahawks.
