Towson, Md. – Playing in just his third
career singles match, senior Yuri Soussov
(Moscow, Russia) pulled out a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6
singles to propel St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis to a
5-4 triumph over Goucher College Thursday afternoon in the
Seahawks' season finale.
Soussov had only seen action in one singles
match in 2007-08 prior to the 2009-10 season. However, he
proved to be quite the hero in his final match as a Seahawk,
closing out his senior campaign with a 2-0 mark at No. 6
singles.
Today's close match was the fifth for the Seahawks (12-10) and
their third 5-4 victory on the year. With their 12 wins in
2009-10, St. Mary's matched the 1997-98 squad's 12-win season under
the guidance of the late Paul Spencer.
SMCM headed into singles action with a 2-1 lead before Goucher
claimed wins at No. 1 and 2 singles to stake a 3-2 margin.
The Seahawks regained a 4-3 advantage with victories by senior
Sam
Barton (Edgewater, Md./Key) and first-year Kyle
Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) at No. 4
and 3 singles, respectively.
Goucher's first-year Charlie Leonard
(Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) evened up the match with a 6-1,
7-5 win over senior Drew Barnes
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) at No. 5
singles.
