SMCM Men’s Tennis Edged by Marymount (Va.)

ARLINGTON, Va. – The second dual match of the season for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team came down to the last match Saturday afternoon (Oct. 10). St. Mary's College (0-2) dropped a 4-3 non-conference decision to Marymount (Va.) University (2-0) as the Saints claimed the victory at No. 4 singles.
 
Gunek Singh tallied the deciding point for Marymount with a 6-3, 7-6 triumph over senior Andrew Hand (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) at flight No. 4.
 
Marymount locked up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, but the Seahawks did not make it easy. Joaquin Sigala and Daniel Henriquez outlasted juniors Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood), 7-5, at No. 1 doubles while Brett Neuhart and Adam Stanulis earned a 6-3 triumph over junior Dylan Courtney (Chaptico, Md./Chopticon) and first-year Oliver Emard (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) at No. 3 doubles.
 
Hand and sophomore Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) helped SMCM avoid the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win over Singh and Rebhi Villasmil.
 
The Saints garnered a 2-0 lead as Henriquez won 6-4, 6-2 over Lyman at No. 3 singles. Cron notched the first point for St. Mary's College at No. 2 singles as Sigala retired (2-6, 6-3, ret.). The match levelled at 2-2 when Emard picked up a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Emilio Escamilla at the No. 5 flight.
 
MU regained the lead when Neuhart posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over sophomore Nate Willoughby (Edgewater, Md./South River) at No. 6 singles but then Nelson tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Villasmil at No. 1 singles.
