St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team finished the fall portion of their 2011-12 season with a 3-1 record after posting an 8-1 victory over NCAA Division II Chowan University Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Seahawks swept doubles action with 8-4 decisions in both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles play while picking up a forfeit win at the third doubles flight. St. Mary's entered singles play with a 4-0 margin with a forfeit win at No. 6 singles.
Sophomores John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) were straight set victors at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, before first-year Sasha Kirasanov (Simferopol, Ukraine) notched a 6-4-, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to help Chowan (0-3) avoid the shutout.
Sophomore Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) finished the fall season with a perfect 8-0 record after tallying a 6-3, 6-0 win over senior Adam Moneypenny (Graham, N.C.) at No. 1 singles.
Senior captain Thomas Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) wrapped the win for the Seahawks with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Danilo Galovic (Belgrade, Serbia).
The Seahawks will kick off their traditional season on February 25 when St. Mary's faces Division II Virginia Union University on the road for a non-conference match at 1:00 pm.
