Frostburg, Md. – Despite season-high performances by guards Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Raven Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn), the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team could not pull out a regular-season finale win at Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks (11-13, 7-9 CAC) dropped an 83-65 decision to the hosts but still nabbed a playoff spot in the 2011 CAC Women's Basketball Tournament thanks to Salisbury University losing at York (Pa.) College today. With Salisbury's loss, St. Mary's clinched the No. 6 seed in the tournament which begins next Tuesday, February 22 with first round action.
St. Mary's will travel to York (13-12, 10-6 CAC) on Tuesday as the Spartans locked up the third seed. The two teams split the season series with each team winning on their home court. Tip-off for Tuesday night's game is 6:00 pm.
Sham tallied a game- and season-best 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the three-point arc while Owens finished with season-highs of 11 points, five rebounds and three-point field goals with three. First-year center Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) added 12 points, four boards, two blocks, and two steals off the bench.
The Seahawks hung tough with Frostburg State in the first half and were only down three at the break. The Bobcats (12-13, 9-7 CAC) opened up the game with a 17-7 run before St. Mary's closed the gap with a 19-8 run in just over four minutes to take over the lead on Owens' three-point shot at 8:15. FSU regrouped and used a 7-3 spurt to claim the lead once again and held on for a 41-38 halftime lead.
Frostburg (12-13, 9-7 CAC) was lighting it up in the first half with 60.0 percent shooting from the field, including 5-of-11 from downtown. St. Mary's enjoyed solid shooting as well with 66.7 percent from long-range for an overall 44.8 field goal percentage for the half. The Seahawks were also 8-of-11 from the free throw line.
First-year guard Elaina Hummel (Huntingdon, Pa./Southern Huntingdon), who finished the game with 16 points to lead the Bobcats, led all players at intermission with 11 points as Hummel made all four of her shots, including three from downtown. Four other Bobcats scored in double digits for the game.
The Bobcats really pulled away from St. Mary's in the second stanza as FSU began with a 10-2 run and augmented an 11-point lead to a 20+ point margin with less than six minutes left in the game.
