St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse fell short in first-year head coach Lisa Valentine's collegiate coaching debut as the Seahawks suffered an 8-7 setback in overtime to Capital Athletic Conference foe, Stevenson University, on a very gusty Saturday afternoon.
Senior attacker Megan Weiss (Odenton, Md./Seton) scored the game-winning goal for the Mustangs (1-0, 1-0 CAC) with 6.4 seconds remaining in the first overtime period as Weiss came off a pick on the crease and rolled around from the left to fire into the top right corner.
Weiss finished the afternoon with a hat trick to pace Stevenson while fellow classmate Lisa Baker (Westminster, Md./Westminster) added two goals and two assists. First-year Marissa Meiklejohn (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) chipped in two as well and first-year attacker Leah Warner (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) rounded out the scoring with a goal and an assist.
St. Mary's (0-1, 0-1 CAC) overcame a 4-1 halftime deficit by scoring five of the second half's first six goals to stake a 6-5 advantage with 16:20 remaining in regulation. Five different Seahawks scored in the 5-1 run with two coming off free position shots while sophomore midfielders Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Amelia Tenberg (Parkton, Md./Hereford) tallied a goal and an assist apiece.
Stevenson reclaimed a one-goal lead at 8:15 as Baker and Warner combined for back-to-back goals in an eight-minute span. The Mustangs did have a Weiss goal called back at 10:09 because of an illegal stick. Fourteen seconds after Stevenson regained the lead, senior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) knotted the game at 8-8.
St. Mary's took three shots in the final eight minutes but Mustang backup goalie, first-year Alyssa Russell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven), denied two shots, including a free position shot. Stevenson had two opportunities to win it in regulation but both shots were stopped by junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), including a free position shot with four seconds on the clock. Simpson went on to finish the game with seven saves.
Stevenson outshot the Seahawks, 21-18, while St. Mary's dominated draw controls, 13-6, as Mirkin came up with a game-best five. The Mustangs did edge the home team, 21-20, in ground balls.
Shackelford led the Seahawk offense with three points (2g, 1a) while Mirkin finished with two. Junior attacker Melissa Mayer (Crofton, Md./South River) and sophomore midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) each tallied a goal.
The Seahawks will look to get Coach Valentine her first career victory next Wednesday, February 23 when they welcome Wesley College to Seahawk Stadium for another conference match at 3:30.
