St. Mary's City, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse first-year head coach Lisa Valentine notched her first collegiate coaching victory as her Seahawks posted an 18-4 victory over Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) recorded a career day as Mirkin scored a hat trick and added a career-best three assists for a career-high six points. Sophomore midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) dished four assists while fellow classmate Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) contributed two goals and two assists.
The Seahawks (1-1, 1-1 CAC) opened up with a 7-0 run and never looked back as St. Mary's owned a 13-1 halftime lead. Junior Mia Brocco (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) denied a shutout win for the hosts with an unassisted goal at 12:01.
Brocco finished as Wesley's scoring leader with a hat trick while sophomore midfielder Nina Cornog (Wilmington, Del./Concord) notched the team's other goal.
After Brocco's goal in the first half, St. Mary's scored six straight, including two to start the second half. Cornog and Brocco tallied back-to-back goals before the Seahawks netted three of the game's last four goals for the 18-4 final.
St. Mary's dominated the game from top to bottom with a 33-6 advantage on shots; a 24-10 margin on ground balls and an 18-6 edge on draw controls.
Mirkin came up with a game-best four draw controls while senior defender Arianna Larrimore (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) and Mirkin each scooped up four ground balls.
In goal, junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and first-year Shelby Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) combined for the win with Simpson picking up a save in the first half.
St. Mary's will look to extend its win streak this Saturday when they welcome conference newcomer, Frostburg State University, to Seahawk Stadium for a game at 1:00 pm.
