Seahawk Men's Tennis Edges Rensselaer

Hilton Head, S.C. – First-year Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) led the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team to a 5-4 triumph over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Monday morning in the Seahawks' first Spring Break match.

Guzzone outlasted senior Evan Creer (Windsor, Mass./Wehconah Regional), 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 at No. 6 singles to give St. Mary's (5-1) its third consecutive victory.  This was Guzzone's third straight singles victory as well.

RPI (1-4) claimed a 1-0 lead as first-year Andre Vorbrodt (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) and junior Kyle Borton (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) defeated Guzzone and first-year John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton), 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.

The Seahawks tied up the match at 1-1 when junior Thomas Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and first-year Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) picked up an 8-5 victory over first-year Jarrett Regier (East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence) and junior Patrick Russo (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) at No. 1 doubles.

The Engineers headed into singles action with a 2-1 lead as Creer and first-year James Kim (Jacksonville, Fla./Taxon School) notched a 9-7 triumph over sophomores Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) at third doubles.

Gear knotted the match once again with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Borton at third singles before Regier returned the lead to RPI with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Hoesman at No. 1 singles.

The match was 3-2 in favor of the Seahawks after Wong recorded his second straight win with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Vorbrodt at second singles.

The teams traded singles wins again when RPI's junior Andrew Snyder (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown Area) tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win over Feighner at No. 5 singles before Feeley improved to 4-1 on the season with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Kim at fourth singles.

St. Mary's will return to action later today against Dickinson College 6:00 pm, respectively.
