St. Mary's Men's Tennis Edged by Concordia (WI)

Hilton Head, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team was on the verge of halting their two-match skid but Concordia (Wis.) University (3-10) had other ideas and nipped the Seahawks (5-4) by a score of 5-4 on Wednesday morning.

The match came down to the fourth singles flight.  Sophomore Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) took the first set, 6-3, before first-year Skip Turner (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North) claimed a 6-3 win of his own in the second set.  Turner then proceeded to post a 10-6 triumph in the tiebreaker set and give his Concordia Falcons their third win of the season.

Concordia started the match with a 3-0 lead as the Falcons swept all three doubles matches, including claiming the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches by 9-7 counts.

First-year Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) picked up the Seahawks first win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles over first-year Russell Johnson (Monticello, Wis./Monticello).  First-year John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) followed Gear with a 6-1, 6-1 win over first-year Taylor Shaffer (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) at No. 5 singles to close the gap to 3-2.

First-year Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) knotted the match at 3-3 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over first-year Nathan Hoeppner (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) at No. 6 singles.  Sophomore Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) gave the Seahawks their first lead of the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over sophomore Pat Schramka (Madison, Wis./Madison Edgewood) at No. 2 singles.

Junior Brian Tresedder (Kingsford, Mich./Kingsford) gutted out a 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 10-7 triumph over junior captain Thomas Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) at No. 1 singles to tie the match up once again.

St. Mary's will return to action tomorrow against William Jewell College at 8:00 am for the Seahawks last match in Hilton Head.
