Box Score

Chestertown, Md. – It was not the 'welcome home' that first-year head coach Lisa Valentine was hoping for as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-10 decision at Washington (Md.) College, her former place of employment.  Sophomore attacker Corinne Ziccardi (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) netted the eventual game-winning goal with 9:56 remaining in the game.

Valentine spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as an assistant coach at Washington, having a hand in the recruitment of many of the Shorewomen playing on the field today.

Washington (2-0) rolled out to a 3-0 lead before senior attacker Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) finally put the Seahawks on the board at 19:15.  The Shorewomen scored twice in a 42-second span to stretch their lead to four.  Junior attacker Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and sophomore midfielder Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) pulled St. Mary's within 5-3 at 12:24.  Washington headed into halftime with a 7-4 advantage.

To start the second stanza, the teams each found the back of the net once before the Seahawks (2-2) notched three unanswered goals to knot the game at 8-8 at 21:16.  Senior attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored consecutive goals to return a two-goal to Washington at 16:59.  Shafer kept her team within one with her tally at 15:09.  Ziccardi and junior attacker Kalli Parrish (Timonium, Md./McDonogh) sealed the win for the Shorewomen with unassisted goals in a span of 1:20 to own a 12-9 lead at 8:36.  St. Mary's sophomore midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) closed the gap to 12-10 at 3:56.

Bennett won the ensuing draw control but the two shots taken by the Seahawks were high and blocked.  Sophomore midfielder Mollie Shipley (Denville, N.J./Morris Catholic) scooped up the ground ball at 2:25 and helped Washington clear the ball, effectively killing the clocl.

Parker and senior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) each had four points for St. Mary's as Parker had three goals and an assist while Mirkin had the opposite with a goal and three assists.  Shafer recorded her first career hat trick.

St. Mary's outshot the Shorewomen, 31-26, but Washington claimed the ground ball battle, 17-13, but the Seahawks dominated the draw controls, 15-8.  Mirkin collected five draw controls and two ground balls to lead her squad.

In goal, junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded 10 saves and one ground ball.

St. Mary's returns to action this Saturday when the Seahawks welcome McDaniel College to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference contest at 12:00 pm.
