Towson, Md. – Three Seahawks had career performances as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team extended their win streak to six games straight with a 17-8 non-conference victory over host Goucher College Wednesday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) paced the Seahawk offense with career-highs of five goals and seven points while sophomore midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) matched her career-best with six assists. Senior attacker Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) equaled her career-high with four goals in the game.
Sophomore midfielder Amelia Tenberg (Parkton, Md./Hereford) put St. Mary's on the board first at 28:38 before Goucher's Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) tied the game up three minutes later. The Seahawks then rattled off seven straight in a span of 11 minutes to boast an 8-1 advantage with 9:12 remaining in the first half. Mirkin scored a hat trick in the run while Macleay had two goals and Parker helped on three goals.
The teams each scored one of the game's next two goals to maintain a seven-goal Seahawk lead before Goucher (5-4) rallied with four goals in 44 seconds to cut the deficit to 9-6 at halftime. First-year midfielder Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal) netted two goals in the Gophers' 4-0 run.
St. Mary's deflated the Gophers' momentum by scoring the first five goals of the second half to stake a 14-6 lead at 11:36. Macleay notched two goals while junior midfielder Cailey Aburn (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) dished two of her season-high three assists in the run.
Sophomore midfielder Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) ended Goucher's scoreless drought of 21:43 by converting on a free position goal at 8:27 before Seahawk junior attacker Melissa Mayer (Crofton, Md./South River) scored consecutive goals for a 16-7 margin. Reifsnyder tallied the Gophers' final goal at 2:48 while 20 seconds later, Mirkin found the back of the net for the 17-8 final.
St. Mary's edged the Gophers, 36-33, in shots while nearly doubling up in ground balls with a 32-19 margin as sophomore midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scooped up a game- and career-best six ground balls. Draw controls were even at 13 each.
Junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) was one-shy of her career-high as Simpson made 16 stops, including nine in the second half.
St. Mary's resumes Capital Athletic Conference action this Saturday, March 26 when the Seahawks travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on No. 17 University of Mary Washington at 1:00 pm.
