St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Succumbs to No. 17 Mary Washington

Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team saw their win streak halted at six games with an 18-7 setback at the hands of No. 17 University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Seniors Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) put St. Mary's (8-3, 2-2 CAC) on the scoreboard first with two goals in the first minute-and-a-half of the game before Mary Washington's junior attacker Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) broke through the Seahawk defense for three straight and a 3-2 Eagle lead at 23:08.

After Macleay scored her second of the day at 22:19, Mary Washington (7-4, 3-1 CAC) closed out the first half on a 6-0 run to head into intermission with a 10-3 advantage.  Junior midfielder Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va./Robinson) recorded a natural hat trick as well for the Eagles in the run.

The squads alternated the first four goals of the second half before the Eagles notched a pair in 20 seconds as junior midfielder Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) assisted on both for a 13-5 UMW lead at 19:39.

Goals by sophomore midfielders Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) and Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) pulled the Seahawks within 14-7 at 12:35 before Mary Washington fired off the game's final four goals, including a pair from Kennedy.

Macleay paced the St. Mary's offense with three goals while four other Seahawks found the back of the net.  Parker finished with two points as she added an assist as well.

St. Mary's dominated draw controls, 16 to 9, as Mirkin and first-year midfielder Claire Tiffany (California, Md./Leonardtown) each won three.

Junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) had a solid effort for her team in between the pipes with 13 saves, including nine in the first half, and a team-best four ground balls.

St. Mary's will return to action this Tuesday, March 29 as the Seahawks welcome Virginia Wesleyan College to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 4:00 pm in non-conference action.
