Ashland, Va. – Four Seahawks tallied four points apiece as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team notched a 16-9 non-conference victory over host Randolph-Macon College Tuesday afternoon to extend their win streak to two.
Sophomore midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) paced St. Mary's (4-2) in scoring with three goals and an assist while midfielders Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) and Cailey Aburn (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) each added a goal and three assists.
Midfielders Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) and Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) also had multiple-goal games for the Seahawks. Mirkin recorded a hat trick while Gray chipped in two goals and an assist.
Mirkin quickly put her team on the board with consecutive goals in a span of 1:49 before senior midfielder Elyse Cooper (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) scored two of her own to tie up the game at 17:36. After the teams each traded a goal to keep it knotted it up, the Seahawks rattled four off, including a pair from sophomore midfielder Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown), for a 7-3 advantage at 1:43. Senior attacker Erin Clare Cassidy (Potomac, Md./Holton Arms) cut the lead to three with her unassisted goal with 46 seconds remaining in the first half.
The two teams exchanged goals in a 20-second span to start off the second stanza before St. Mary's fired off four straight goals again, including two from Shackelford, to boast a 12-5 advantage at 9:15. Randolph-Macon (0-3) scored consecutive goals to stop the momentum but to no avail as the Seahawks put together another 4-0 run to put the game out of reach with 1:59 left in the game. The Yellow Jackets netted the last two goals in the final 1:27 minutes of the game.
Junior attacker Kelly Egan (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) was the offensive leader for the Yellow Jackets as Egan had a hat trick and two assists while Cassidy and Cooper finished two goals each.
St. Mary's outshot the home team, 34-21, and won the draw control battle, 15 to 10, as Shackelford and first-year midfielder Claire Tiffany (California, Md./Leonardtown) each had four draw controls. Randolph-Macon edged the Seahawks in ground balls, 18-15.
In goal, junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded five saves with seven goals against while scooping up a game-high four ground balls. Senior Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) replaced Simpson and had a save in the final four minutes of the game.
St. Mary's returns to action this Saturday as the Seahawks welcome Ohio Wesleyan University and Centenary (N.J.) College to Seahawk Stadium for a doubleheader. St. Mary's plays Ohio Wesleyan first at 10:00 am then takes on Centenary at 3:00 pm.
