St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team easily recorded a 7-2 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Frostburg State University (6-7, 3-4 CAC) Wednesday as the Seahawks (9-7, 4-1 CAC) remained in second place in the league standings.
St. Mary's headed into singles action with a 3-0 advantage after capturing all three doubles flights, starting with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles followed by an 8-1 victory at No. 2. Sophomores Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Lukas Iraola (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) wrapped up doubles action with an 8-3 triumph over juniors Eddie McMurtrie (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) and Tyler Forster (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key).
This week's CAC Co-Player of the Week, junior Mike Stevenson (Bowie, Md./Bowie) notched the Bobcats first point of the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win over sophomore Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) at No. 1 singles.
First-year Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), this week's CAC Co-Player of the Week, responded for SMCM with a straight-set victory over first-year Aaron Littlejohn (Severna Park, Md.) at the second singles flight.
Iraola recorded his second consecutive singles win with a gutsy victory in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 over first-year Andrew Siemann (Frostburg, Md./Bishop Walsh) at sixth singles.
Senior Ramon Gutierrez (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert CC) then tallied the second point for Frostburg with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Feeley at No. 3 singles.
First-year John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) notched a 6-3, 6-1 victory over junior Matt Mansfield (Ocean City, Md.) at the fourth singles flight for a 6-2 Seahawk lead.
First-year Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) picked up the final point for St. Mary's as he dropped no games against McMurtrie at No. 5 singles.
The Seahawks will continue with conference action tomorrow as St. Mary's travels to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on 11-time CAC champion, University of Mary Washington. The match starts at 6:30 pm.
