Fredericksburg, Va. – First-years Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), this week's CAC Co-Men's Tennis Player of the Week, and Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) were the only Seahawks to notch wins Thursday night as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to No. 23 University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action Thursday night.

Mary Washington (14-9, 7-0 CAC) swept all three double matches, including the regionally-ranked tandem of senior Kaz Murata (Nashville, Tenn./Saddlebrook Prep [Fla.]) and junior Riley Baver (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) handing Gear and his partner, sophomore Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), their first conference loss of the season at No. 1 doubles.

The Eagles increased their lead to 7-0 as the hosts won four consecutive singles flights.  Gear finally put St. Mary's (9-8, 4-2 CAC) on the board with his 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 triumph over first-year Alex Blakhin (Moscow, Russia/Saddlebrook Prep [Fla.]) at No. 2 singles.

Guzzone also had to battle for his win at No. 5 singles as he claimed the first set, 6-4, before dropping a 6-3 decision to first-year Eric Caltabiano (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) to even the match.  Guzzone then outlasted Caltabiano, 13-11, in the tiebreaker set for the victory.

The Seahawks will travel to Frederick, Maryland for their final regular-season conference matchup of the season, taking on host Hood College at 3:00 pm.
