St. Mary's City, Md. – For the first time since the 2008 campaign, the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team has advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament semifinals as the fourth-seeded Seahawks eliminated No. 5 seed Frostburg State University, 6-3, Sunday afternoon in first round action.
St. Mary's (11-8) will now face top-seeded and 11-time CAC champion, No. 23 University of Mary Washington, tomorrow in Fredericksburg, Virginia for a semifinal match at 3:30 pm.
The Seahawks opened up the match with a 2-0 lead after claiming wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles before Frostburg State's (6-8) duo of junior Mike Stevenson (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and first-year Aaron Littlejohn (Severna Park, Md.) handed the tandem of sophomore Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and first-year Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) a rare loss with an 8-3 decision. The loss drops Wong/Gear to 7-3 on the season.
Gear increased his team's lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Littlejohn at No. 2 singles to improve to 17-1 overall with his 14th straight singles win. In the process, he also set a new school single-season mark for overall (dual-meet plus tournament) singles wins, surpassing Jason Whiteman '99 mark of 16 recorded in 1997.
Sophomore Lukas Iraola (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) gave the Seahawks a three-point cushion with a 6-2, 6-3 win over first-year Andrew Siemann (Frostburg, Md./Bishop Walsh) at No. 6 singles.
St. Mary's continued to roll as first-year Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) posted a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over junior Eddie McMurtrie (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) at No. 5 singles to improve to 14-5 on the season with his fourth consecutive win.
Stevenson picked up the Bobcats' second point with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Wong at No. 1 singles before first-year John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) won his second consecutive match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over junior Matt Mansfield (Ocean City, Md.) at No. 4 singles.
Frostburg's final point came at No. 3 singles as senior Ramon Gutierrez (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert CC) notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over sophomore Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mt. St. Joseph).
