Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team suffered their first shutout loss of the season as the Seahawks dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 25 University of Mary Washington Monday afternoon in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament.
St. Mary's (11-9) has two more matches left in the 2011 season with Goucher College coming to the Somerset Tennis Complex on Thursday, April 21 for Senior Day at 3:00 pm followed by Lancaster Bible College four days later at 3:00 pm as well.
Top-seeded Mary Washington (15-10), who is ranked fifth in the Atlantic South region, will now host No. 2 seed Salisbury University in the CAC championship match on Thursday, April 21. Salisbury blanked York to advance to the title match.
The Seahawks' tandem of first-years Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and first-year Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) played tough against the region's fourth-ranked tandem of senior Kaz Murata (Nashville, Tenn./Saddlebrook Prep [Fla.]) and junior Riley Baver (Wayne, Pa./Radnor), taking four games the duo in an 8-4 loss at No. 1 doubles.
Gear saw his 14-match win streak halted by first-year Alex Blakhin (Moscow, Russia/Saddlebrook Prep [Fla.]) as Blakhin posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gear, avenging his three-set loss (4-6, 6-2, 10-12) to Gear from the previous Thursday (April 14). Only his second loss of the season, this was Gear's first loss since October 9.
