Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team dropped their third consecutive contest as the Seahawks suffered a 14-5 setback to second-ranked Salisbury University on a wet Saturday afternoon.
After Salisbury's sophomore attacker Katie Bollhorst (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) put her team on the scoreboard first at 27:05, senior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) responded for St. Mary's with her 29th goal of the season at 22:51. Then senior attacker Trish DiGirolomo (Davidsonville, Md./Spalding) sparked a 4-0 run as DiGirolomo was involved in three of the four goals, giving the Sea Gulls a 5-1 lead at 7:00.
Senior attacker Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) stopped the Seahawks' scoreless 17:49-minute drought with her tally at 5:02 off an assist by junior midfielder Cailey Aburn (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll). Bollhorst and DiGirolomo notched the final two goals of the first half to give Salisbury a 7-2 halftime advantage.
Following the end of the halftime break, lightning was spotted in the area and caused a significant delay for the two teams.
Salisbury (12-1, 6-0 CAC) stretched its lead to seven with two quick goals in the first 1:04 of the second half. A pair of Seahawk goals sandwiched a DiGirolomo tally as sophomore midfielder Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) converted on a free-position shot at 20:44 and Mirkin scored her second of the day at 9:01. Four different Sea Gulls scored the next goals before sophomore midfielder Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) found the back of the net with 17 seconds left for the 14-5 final.
Mirkin paced St. Mary's offense with two goals while sophomore midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) collected two assists. Mirkin also led the way for the Seahawks (8-5, 2-3 CAC) with a game-best three draw controls.
In goal, junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded 11 saves and a game-best three ground balls.
St. Mary's hopes to snap its three-game skid on Wednesday, April 6 as the Seahawks travel to Frederick to face Hood College in another conference matchup at 4:30 pm.
