Frederick, Md. – Ten Seahawks netted goals as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team snapped their three-game skid with an 18-7 Capital Athletic Conference victory over host Hood College Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Gleaning) paced the Seahawk offense with six points (2g, 4a) while senior Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) added five points (4g, 1a). Sophomore Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) contributed a goal and three assists while junior Kimmy Routson (Lutherville, Md./Towson) chipped in two scores and a helper.
The Seahawks (9-5, 3-3 CAC) rolled out to a 9-0 advantage at 11:21 before Hood (4-9, 0-6 CAC) finally broke through with an unassisted goal by junior Katie Vu (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) at 7:58. Junior Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Routson each found the back of the net before Vu struck again with a free position goal at 1:35.
St. Mary's headed into halftime with an 11-2 advantage. Parker (3a) and Mirkin (2g, 1a) each tallied three points in the Seahawks' 9-0 run while senior Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and junior Melissa Mayer (Crofton, Md./South River) each notched two goals.
The Seahawks outscored Hood, 7-5, in the second half behind a pair of 3-0 runs. Mirkin and Parker scored twice in the half while Shackelford dished out two assists.
St. Mary's outshot the Blazers, 26-14, while dominating draw controls by an 18 to 9 margin. Shackelford collected four draw controls while sophomore Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) had three.
All three Seahawk goalies received playing time. Junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) started the game and made one save with no goals against in 17:25. Senior Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) allowed five goals with three stops and one ground ball in 35:56 while first-year Shelby Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) finished out the game, yielding two goals.
St. Mary's travels to Pennsylvania for its next contest as the Seahawks take on York College in an important league matchup this Saturday, April 9 at 3:00 pm.
