Bridgewater, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team had their win streak halted at two matches Saturday afternoon as host Bridgewater (Va.) College handed the Seahawks a 5-4 loss in non-conference action.
The fourth singles flight would end up to be the decisive match as senior Teddy Callow (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over first-year John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) to extend Bridgewater's lead to 5-2.
Bridgewater (12-6) notched the first point of the match as junior Brent Floyd (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) and sophomore Peter Hawkins (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) picked up an 8-3 victory over Feighner and first-year Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) at No. 2 doubles.
The Seahawks (8-7) then captured the next two doubles matches to enter singles action with a 2-1 advantage, winning both by 8-5 counts as sophomore Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and first-year Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) registered their fifth consecutive No. 1 doubles win.
The Eagles claimed four straight matches, including No. 4 singles, to stake a 5-2 margin before Gear tallied a 6-3, 6-4 win over senior Brad DeWitt (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) at No. 2 singles. This is Gear's 10th consecutive singles win as well as his team-leading 13th.
Junior Robbie Bourdon (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) recorded his third singles win of the season with a 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 triumph over junior Matthew Chaulkin (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) at the sixth singles flight.
The Seahawks will return to action on Tuesday, April 12 as St. Mary's welcomes NCAA Division II University of the District of Columbia to the Somerset Tennis Complex for non-conference action at 3:30 pm.
