St. Mary's Women's Basketball Bounces Back with Win at Frostburg State

Box Score

Frostburg, Md. – Sophomore guard Raven Owens (Arnold, Md./Severn School) collected her third 20-point game of the season in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 72-57 Capital Athletic Conference victory at Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon.

After going 0-for-4 from the field in the first half, Owens notched 19 of her game-high 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the final 20 minutes as the Seahawks (6-10, 4-3 CAC) overcame a 31-27 halftime deficit for their fourth conference victory of the season.

Forwards Joanna Murray (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) and Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) each contributed to the offense with nine points each while junior guard Jasmine Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) added seven points, a game-high seven assists and a team-best six rebounds.

Sophomores Marché Pearson (Laurel, Md./Laurel) and Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) each hauled in six boards as St. Mary's registered its third 50-rebound game, including pulling down 31 defensive caroms.

The Seahawks came out of intermission on a 28-9 run that erased the four-point halftime setback and propelled them to a 55-40 advantage with 12:03 remaining.  Owens, who sparked the run with a layup at 19:32, scored 12 straight in the run and finished with 16 of the team's 28 points.  Frostburg State was unable to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.

While St. Mary's shot nearly 46% from the field and 77% from the free throw line in the second stanza, the host Bobcats dropped 12-percentage points in their shooting, sliding from 36.4% in the first 20 minutes to 24.3%.  Frostburg also struggled at the line, making just 7-of-13 in the second half after missing only one in the first half.

The first half featured seven tied scores, including the seventh one coming at 1:58 as junior forward Brynn Arnone (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) connected on a jumper to knot the game at 27-all.  The Bobcats then closed out the half on a 4-0 run for the 31-27 advantage at the break.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Erickson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) paced Frostburg (5-11, 3-5 CAC) with a double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds while first-year guard Simone Wise (Columbia, Md./Howard) chipped in 10 off the bench.

The Seahawks will return to action on Wednesday, January 18 when St. Mary's travels to the Eastern Shore to take on Salisbury University (7-5, 5-1 CAC) in a conference match-up at 6:00 pm.
