Seahawk Women's Basketball Victorious in Regular-Season Finale

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team will enter the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament on a two-game win streak after handing Frostburg State University an 85-60 setback Saturday afternoon in conference action.

Three Seahawks finished with double-digit scoring as the team shot 41.8% from the field, including 44.8-percent in the first half.  Sophomore guard Leah Cranmer (Ijamsville, Md./Severn School) paced St. Mary's with a career-best 12 points off the bench as Cranmer went 7-for-7 at the free throw line.  Junior forward Joanna Murray (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) added 11 points while sophomore guard Aura Payne (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) contributed 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor, including making both of her three-point shot attempts.

Frostburg State's (5-20, 3-13 CAC) only lead of the game came at 19:36 of the first half when first-year guard RJ James (Baltimore City, Md./Pikesville) made the backend of two free throws.  The Seahawks then proceeded to build a double-figure lead, owning a 31-11 advantage with 5:24 remaining in the half.

Cranmer's seven first-half points and six from sophomore Bridget Wilkins (Washington, D.C./Washington Waldorf) helped St. Mary's to a 41-20 halftime lead.  Stingy defense also led the Seahawks to a 21-point scoring margin, forcing Frostburg to commit 18 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Raven Owens (Arnold, Md./Severn School) notched 10 points as well while sophomore center Myeisha Wallace (West River, Md./Southern Senior) pulled down a team-best eight boards as St. Mary's edged the Wolverines, 44-41, in the rebounding battle.

St. Mary's (10-15, 8-8 CAC) continued its dominance in the second stanza, connecting on five triples in the final 20 minutes after only making two in the first half.  The Seahawks boasted a 20-point lead for the entire second half, including their biggest lead of the game of 35 points at 5:20 (79-44).

The home team benefited from Frostburg's 32 miscues by scoring 36 points off those Bobcat turnovers.  Frostburg also sent St. Mary's to the line 40 times and the Seahawks just missed eight free throws for an 80.0-percent.

James finished the contest with a game-best 15 points while junior guard Stephanie Straka (Jerome, Pa./Conemaugh Township) came off the bench to chip in 14 points.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Tuesday, February 21 at 7:00 pm when the Seahawks travel to Arlington to take on Marymount (Va.) University (25-0, 16-0 CAC) in CAC First Round action.
