Virginia Beach, Va. – Junior midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) lifted the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to its first win of the 2012 season as her goal with 49 seconds remaining gave St. Mary's an 8-7 non-conference win over host Virginia Wesleyan College on a soggy Wednesday afternoon.

Parker took a feed from senior attacker Cailey Aburn (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll School) and shot it past senior Michelle Mace (Dumfries, Va./Woodbridge Forest Park) for her second goal of the season and the eventual game-winning goal in the final minute of the game.

Virginia Wesleyan (1-1) could not generate any additional offense in the waning minute of the contest as St. Mary's senior attacker Kimmy Routson (Lutherville, Md./Towson) won the ensuing draw control to keep the ball out of Marlin hands.

Junior midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) paced the Seahawk offense with a hat trick while senior attacker Melissa Mayer (Crofton, Md./South River) added three points as well on a goal and career-best two assists.  Junior midfielder Amelia Tenberg (Parkton, Md./Hereford) had a multiple-goal effort as well as Tenberg found the back of the net twice.

Courtney Williams gave the host Marlins a 2-0 lead at 20:13 before junior attacker Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) put St. Mary's on the board at 18:13.  Nikki Salyers made it a two-goal game once again at 17:47 before Tenberg notched an unassisted goal at 9:56 to head into intermission with a 3-2 deficit.

The Seahawks (1-2) claimed their first lead of the game on a Mayer goal at 20:02 of the second half before Shackelford gave her team a two-goal advantage with an unassisted tally at 19:00.  Virginia Wesleyan picked up two unanswered goals to tie it up at 5-5.  In the final 11:29 of the game, St. Mary's would score to go up one before the Marlins score to knot it up once again.

Sophomore defender Claire Tiffany (California, Md./Leonardtown) commanded the defense with five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while Shackelford scooped up four loose balls.  Senior midfielder Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led the way with two draw controls as VWC edged the Seahawks, 10-7.

Seahawk senior goalkeeper Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) continued her double-digit save efforts with 12 this afternoon as Simpson faced 31 shots.  Virginia Wesleyan outshot St. Mary's, 30-25, while edging the Seahawks in ground balls (28-24).

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, March 3 as St. Mary's travels to Westminster, Maryland, to take on McDaniel College in non-conference action at 1:00 pm.
