Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team moved to .500 on the season with its second consecutive victory as the Seahawks posted an 8-5 non-conference triumph over the visiting Haverford College Fords Saturday afternoon.
Junior attacker Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) paced St. Mary's (3-3) in scoring with two goals and two assists while senior attacker Melissa Mayer (Crofton, Md./South River) and junior midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) each added two goals.
Haverford (1-3) claimed a 2-1 lead at 22:35 as first-year Diana Perry (Bethesda, Md./Milton Academy [Mass.]) found the back of the net twice. The Seahawks responded with three straight goals, including back-to-back goals from Shafer, to stake a 4-2 lead at 8:40. It was a 4-3 Seahawk lead at halftime as senior midfielder Josie Ferri (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) converted on a free position shot at 4:42.
Mayer started off the second half with consecutive goals to put St. Mary's ahead 6-3 at 24:00 before junior midfielder Perrin Downing (Greenville, Del./Wilmington Friends) and Perry each scored to cut the lead to one at 18:33. The contest went scoreless for the next five minutes before Shackelford converted on a free position shot for a 7-5 St. Mary's margin at 13:32. First-year midfielder Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) gave her team the three-goal margin win as Hanacek completed a feed from Shafer at 2:29.
First-year defender Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) continued her strong defensive stance for the Seahawks as Decker notched team-highs of five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Seahawk senior goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished the afternoon with six saves and three ground balls as Simpson faced 16 shots.
St. Mary's outshot the Fords, 20-16, and doubled Haverford in draw controls, 10-5. Haverford, however, did gain the edge in ground balls by a 24-20 margin.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, March 13 when St. Mary's faces No. 12 Messiah College (4-0) at a neutral site in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at noon.
