Box Score Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team saw its two-game win streak come to an end Tuesday afternoon as the Seahawks dropped a 16-3 decision to No. 12 Messiah College.
Junior midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) notched two goals on the day to lead St. Mary's (3-4) in scoring while fellow classmate Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) added a score and junior midfielder Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) dished out an assist.
Messiah (5-0) rolled to an 11-0 lead with 3:38 remaining in the first half, staking a quick 3-0 advantage in a two-minute span. Parker finally got the Seahawks on the board with 42 seconds on the clock as she picked up her fourth goal of the season.
Senior Rachel Dirksen (Glenside, Pa./Abington) paced all players with four goals and an assist while senior midfielder Jaime Gerhart (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) contributed two goals and a helper to the Falcon offense.
The Messiah Falcons outscored St. Mary's, 5-2, in the second half as Shafer and Parker found the back of the net at 16:32 and 7:44 of the stanza, respectively.
Seahawk senior goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished the afternoon with 13 saves, four ground balls, and one caused turnover as Simpson faced 39 shots.
Parker chipped in four ground balls and a caused turnover as well while first-year defender Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and three loose ball pickups. Shafer won two draw controls as Messiah claimed the statistical category by a 15-6 margin.
The Falcons outshot St. Mary's, 39-15, and posted a 23-16 margin in ground balls.
The Seahawks will look to rebound next Tuesday, March 20 when St. Mary's welcomes Goucher College (2-5) to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
