St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) tallied three points on a goal and two assists in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team in its 16-7 loss to No. 13 University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.

Joining Shafer with multiple points was first-year attacker Megan Essman (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) as Essman notched her second goal of the season and her first collegiate assist.

Mary Washington (7-2, 3-1 CAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead before senior attacker Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) put St. Mary's on the scoreboard as Bennett completed a pass from Shafer at 25:17.  The Eagles responded with three more unanswered goals before senior attacker Cailey Aburn (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll School) converted a free position shot at 15:05 for a 6-2 UMW lead.

The visitors quickly answered back with four consecutive goals to take a 10-2 advantage with one minute remaining in the first half.  Mary Washington headed into halftime with a 10-3 lead as junior midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made good on a free position shot three seconds before intermission.

Junior midfielder Keller Torrey (Roswell, Ga./Centennial) commanded the Eagle attack with seven points on five goals and two assists while sophomore midfielder Jenna Petrucelli (Cranbury, N.J./Peddie School) wasn't far behind with five goals.

The Eagles opened up the second half with four straight goals, including three by Torrey, before Shafer put an end to the run with her unassisted goal at 19:33.  St. Mary's went on to score three of the last five goals of the contest, receiving scores from senior attacker Kimmy Routson (Lutherville, Md./Towson), Essman and junior midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis).

Seahawk senior goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) had nine saves on 36 shots faced while picking up one ground ball.

The Eagles outshot St. Mary's, 36-16, and posted an 18-7 draw control advantage, while the Seahawks edged Mary Washington, 16-15, in ground balls.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, March 31 as St. Mary's travels to Owings Mills, Maryland to take on No. 20 Stevenson University (5-4) in another conference contest at 1:00 pm.
