St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Almost Upends No. 20 Stevenson

Box Score

Owings Mills, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team battled back from an early 4-1 setback to come within one twice but St. Mary's rally fell short as host No. 20 Stevenson University pulled out a 13-10 Capital Athletic Conference win Saturday afternoon.

The Stevenson Mustangs (6-4, 3-1 CAC) owned an 11-7 advantage with 14:32 remaining in the game but St. Mary's (5-6, 1-2 CAC) rattled off three unanswered goals to close the gap to 11-10 with 9:31 left on the clock.  The Mustangs scored twice to recoup a three-goal cushion at 6:44.  St. Mary's took three more shots, one which was saved and another that hit the post, but the Seahawks could not forge a solid offensive front as three turnovers and one failed clear hindered their progress for the 13-10 final.

Junior midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) was St. Mary's leading scorer with a hat trick while senior attacker Cailey Aburn (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll School) contributed two goals and an assist.  Junior midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) also had three points on the day with a goal and two assists while fellow classmate Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) chipped in two scores.

Stevenson jumped out a 4-1 lead at 20:01 as sophomore attacker Leah Warner (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) scored twice for the Mustangs.  The two teams alternated the next four goals before Shackelford netted back-to-back goals in 58 seconds to send the Seahawks down just 6-5 at halftime.

Warner guided Stevenson to the win with a game-high five goals while first-year Amanda LeGar (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) added a hat trick.

The Mustangs opened up the second half with a 5-2 run in the first 15:28 of the half to post a four-goal margin before St. Mary's scored three in a row to cut the deficit to one for the second time in the game.

Shackelford claimed four draw controls for the Seahawks as Stevenson posted a 15-10 margin in draw controls.  The Mustangs also controlled ground balls, 17 to 5.

Stevenson outshot the Seahawks, 32-21, and senior goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) turned away a season-best 16 Mustang attempts.

The Seahawks will face their third ranked opponent in as many games as St. Mary's welcomes second-ranked Salisbury University (10-0, 3-0 CAC) to Seahawk Stadium on Wednesday, April 4 for more conference action at 4:00 pm.
