Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team posted its third win in a row Sunday morning with a 9-0 shutout of Frostburg State University before falling in a close 5-4 match to NCAA Division II Davis & Elkins College, who is ranked seventh in the Atlantic region.
St. Mary's (13-3, 2-1 CAC) blanking of host Frostburg State (6-6, 0-2 CAC) was the team's eighth shutout win of the season and second over a Capital Athletic Conference opponent. The Seahawks started the match with a 3-0 advantage after capturing all three doubles matches and then won all but one singles match in straight sets.
Junior Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) needed three sets to take care of sophomore Aaron Littlejohn (Severna Park, Md.) at No. 2 singles, handing Littlejohn a 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 setback.
In their match against regionally-ranked Davis & Elkins, the Seahawks fell behind 0-3 as D&E claimed all three doubles matches, including a highly, contested match at No. 3 doubles in which the sophomore tandem of John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) suffered a 9-8 (10-8) loss.
Guzzone closed the gap to 3-1 with his 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles before the Senators notched a win at No. 3 singles as junior Agustin Ochoa (Medellin, Colombia), who is ranked 18th in the Atlantic region, tallied a 6-2, 6-1 victory over senior captain Thomas Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) for a 4-1 lead.
Davis & Elkins got the decisive fifth point at No. 2 singles as Wong fell 2-6, 2-6 to first-year Simon Meriau (Les Lucs sur Boulogne, France), who is ranked 11th in the Atlantic region.
Junior Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) brought the Seahawks within 5-2 with his three-set victory at No. 4 singles before sophomore Andrew Gear's (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) win over his regionally-ranked opponent made it a 5-3 match. Gear pulled a 6-2, 6-3 upset over first-year Leonardo Vieira (Rio Claro, Brazil), who is ranked sixth in the Atlantic region.
Feighner wrapped up the match for the Seahawks with his 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) triumph at No. 5 singles.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, April 4 as St. Mary's travels to Dover, Delaware to take on Wesley College in a conference match at 2:30 pm.
