St. Mary's Women's Lacrosse Rolls to Third Straight Win

Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team used an 11-goal surge in the second half to notch a 19-10 Capital Athletic Conference win over the host Frostburg State University Bobcats Saturday afternoon, extending its longest win streak of the season to three consecutive victories.

Junior midfielder Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) collected a game-high seven points for the second game in a row as Parker tallied four goals and had three assists, leaving her just three points shy of her 200th career point.  Fellow classmate Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) posted another strong performance with a career-best five goals.

Senior captain Cailey Aburn (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll School) also recorded five points on two goals and three assists while fellow senior Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) added her third consecutive hat trick and junior midfielder Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) dished out three assists.

Frostburg State owned a 4-3 lead at 14:46 as sophomore midfielder Malory Brunett (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) scored twice.  St. Mary's unleashed five straight goals to take over the lead for good with an 8-4 margin as 29 seconds remained in the first half.  Brunett struck again with 11 ticks on the clock to close the gap to 8-5 at halftime.

Brunett finished as the Bobcats' leading scorer with four goals and an assist while junior midfielder Taylor Cassatt Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) registered a hat trick and sophomore attacker Katelyn Kesecker (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) added two goals and an assist.

Cassatt struck for two of the second half's first three goals before the Seahawks rattled off five unanswered scores to stake a 14-7 advantage at 16:06.  Frostburg responded with back-to-back goals to shave the deficit to five goals at 11:56.  Shafer sparked a 3-0 run just 15 seconds later for a17-9 Seahawk lead at 8:04.  St. Mary's closed out the game with a 2-1 spurt, including Shafer's goal with six seconds left.

St. Mary's (8-7, 4-3 CAC) was efficient on free position shots, making 4-of-7 as Parker went 2-for-2, while the Bobcats were just 3-of-8 on 8-meter shots.  The Seahawks outshot the hosts, 33-25, while posting a 23-16 margin in ground balls as senior goalkeeper Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) led the way with four.  However, Frostburg (4-11, 2-6 CAC) earned a 20-11 advantage in ground balls as Cassatt won five.

Simpson finished with nine saves for St. Mary's while Frostburg's goalie duo collected a total of 13 stops.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 17th when St. Mary's welcomes York College of Pennsylvania (12-3, 6-1 CAC) to Seahawk Stadium in conference action at 4:00 pm.
