Seahawk Women's Lacrosse Bows out of CAC Tournament

Box Score

Owings Mills, Md. – Senior attacker Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and junior midfielder Amelia Tenberg (Parkton, Md./Hereford) paced the fifth-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team in an 11-7 loss to fourth-seeded Stevenson University Saturday afternoon in the first round of the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.

The loss ends St. Mary's 2012 campaign with an 8-9 overall record while No. 19 Stevenson (9-6) advances to the CAC semifinals at top-seeded Salisbury University on Tuesday, April 24.

Bennett and Tenberg each tallied two goals while junior attacker Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) dished out two assists.

Stevenson jumped out to a 4-0 advantage at 23:38 as three of the four goals came off of free position shots.  The two teams then exchanged scores for the next six goals as Tenberg, senior attacker Kimmy Routson (Lutherville, Md./Towson) and first-year attacker Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) each found the back of the net for the Seahawks for a 7-3 Mustang advantage at halftime.

Senior midfielder Laura Grammer (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) led Stevenson in the win with four points on three goals and an assist while sophomore attacker Marissa Meiklejohn (Severn, Md./Old Mill) picked up a hat trick and junior Olivia Baker (Perry Hall, Md./Catholic) added two goals.

The Mustangs scored the first two goals of the second half before Tenberg notched her second tally of the afternoon to make it a 9-4 game at 14:15.  Goals by Baker and Meiklejohn sandwiched junior midfielder Erin Shackelford's (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) goal to extend Stevenson's lead to 11-5 at 6:45.  Back-to-back goals by Bennett in the final 1:48 of the contest made the final 11-7.

Stevenson outshot St. Mary's, 27-20, while the Mustangs posted a 19-14 margin in ground balls.  The hosts edged the Seahawks, 11-9, despite a game-high five draw controls from junior midfielder Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River).

Senior goalkeeper Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made 10 saves while scooping up a game-best five ground balls.  Simpson also forced a pair of Mustang turnovers.  Stevenson's senior Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) registered seven stops and one loose ball pickup in the win.
