Frederick, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team posted a resounding 9-0 shutout victory over former Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Hood College, Friday afternoon to kick off the 2012-13 campaign. The Seahawks (1-0) dropped only three games against Hood (0-1).
The Seahawk win dampened the dedication ceremonies for Hood's new Tennis Complex. This afternoon's match was the first ever played on the new courts. The victory also marked first-year head coach Drew Miller's first victory at the helm of the Seahawk men's tennis program.
Junior Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) collected his 41st career singles victory with a straight set victory over junior Chad Love (Boonsboro, Md.), notching a double-bagel win at No. 1 singles. Gear also teamed up with first-year Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) for an 8-1 triumph at No. 1 doubles, defeating Love and junior Trevor Baldwin (Flemington, N.J.).
Hardesty tallied his first collegiate singles win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over senior Luis Cotto (Frederick, Md.) at No. 2 singles. Senior Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over Baldwin at the third flight.
Junior John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over sophomore Philip Roedig (Farmingdale, N.Y.) at No. 4 singles. Feighner and Feeley had joined forces for an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
Junior J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) registered a 6-0, 6-0 win over first-year Thomas Spivey (Gaithersburg, Md.) at No. 5 singles.
The Seahawks will return to action on Tuesday, September 18 as St. Mary's travels to Washington, D.C. to face Division II University of the District of Columbia at 3:00 pm.
