Vagnoni Paces St. Mary's Women's Basketball with Career-High 21

Galloway, N.J. – Junior guard Matti Vagnoni (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School) poured in a career-best 21 points in the consolation game of The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks (0-2) dropped a close decision to Farmingdale State College (1-1), falling 83-79.

Vagnoni scored 15 of her 21 points in the first half as she went 5-of-9 from downtown in the first 20 minutes. She finished the afternoon with a career-best 7-of-15 effort from the behind the three-point arc. Senior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) collected her second consecutive double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

St. Mary's trailed for the first minute of the game before a 13-0 run, fueled by six points from Vagnoni, put the Seahawks in the driver's seat for the rest of the first half. Vagnoni and Pruden paced the Seahawks to a 41-34 first half advantage as the duo scored in double digits. Along with Vagnoni's 15 points, Pruden added 12 and senior Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) contributed six points and six boards to keep St. Mary's ahead of the Rams.

Farmingdale State outscored the Seahawks by a 22-12 margin to stake its first lead since 5-2 at 18:55 of the first half. St. Mary's knotted the contest at 58-58 on a free throw by senior center Myeisha Wallace (West River, Md./Southern) but were unable to regain the lead.

The Rams distanced themselves by 12 (77-65) at 4:44 on a jumper by junior guard Camille Romero (Queens, N.Y.) but senior forward Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) continued the fight for St. Mary's, notching 10 of the team's final 14 points to close the gap to 80-77 with 42 seconds remaining.

Both Lewis and Pearson finished the afternoon with 14 points each while Pearson dished a career-best six assists. As a team, the Seahawks shot 35.1% from the field and 75.0% from the free throw line while committing 20 turnovers to Farmingdale's 25. Rebounds were even at 48 each.

Senior guard Nicky Young (Queens, N.Y.) paced the Rams with game-highs of 30 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists while Romero tallied 14 and junior guard Christina Merrill (Leviitown, N.Y.) chipped in 11 for FSC's first win of the season.

The Seahawks will look to notch their first win of the season next Saturday, November 23 as they host Shenandoah University for their home-opener at 2:00 pm in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
