St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team rolled to their third consecutive victory as the Seahawks (3-1) posted a 121-84 non-conference win over Randolph-Macon College Friday afternoon. Four Seahawk swimmers won two events each as St. Mary's claimed gold medals in eight of 11 events.
Junior captain Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford) captured the 200 freestyle in 2:02.94 while sophomore Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) took second less than a second later (2:03.39). Raab picked up her second gold in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:11.40 followed by senior captain Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) in second (1:12.35).
Raab led the Seahawks in the 100 backstroke as well with a second-place finish in 1:06.45 while sophomore Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) came in third (1:07.85).
Junior Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) paced the team in the long-distance events with a pair of first-place finishes in the 1000 and 500 freestyle events. Kohles went 11:11.48 for gold in the 1000 followed by sophomore Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) in second (11:38.28). Kohles touched the wall in 5:28.57 to take top honors in the 500 with O'Connor placing second four seconds later.
The foursome of Straight, senior captain Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), Machlin, and McIlmail went 1:57.39 in the 200 medley relay to notch the win in that event.
Machlin tallied an individual win in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.07 while McIlmail led a 1-3 finish in the 100 freestyle, winning the event in 56.38 and D'Ambrosio placing third in 58.49.
O'Connor battled Kohles for the first-place finish in the 200 individual medley as O'Connor won in 2:19.26, just two-hundredths of a second ahead of Kohles. D'Ambrosio paced the Seahawks in the 50 freestyle with a second-place finish in 26.63.
Sophomore Katie Andersen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), first-year Samantha Liming (Silver Spring, Md./JFK), junior Mónica Claro (Rockville, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]), and senior Hanna Rizkallah (Frederick, Md./Urbana) swam a 1:53.45 to finish third in the 200 freestyle relay.
St. Mary's will be back in the pool tomorrow as the Seahawks travel to York College of Pennsylvania for a quad meet with Dickinson College and St. Vincent College. The meet is slated to start at 1:00 pm.
