St. Mary's Men's Tennis Swings Past Southern Virginia

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team notched a 7-2 non-conference win over future Capital Athletic Conference member, Southern Virginia University, Saturday afternoon.

First-year Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middleton) and junior Daniel Harris (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) notched the Seahawks' (7-5) first point with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Junior Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and first-year Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) recorded their 12th straight victory for a 2-0 St. Mary's lead as the duo posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Southern Virginia (6-4) tallied its first point at No. 2 doubles as sophomore Brian Blocher (Oak Ridge, Tenn./Webb School) and Andrew Angerbauer (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful) defeated junior John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and first-year Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills), 8-6, at No. 2 doubles to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Seahawks were then victorious in five consecutive singles matches to stake a 7-1 advantage. Gear moved his win streak to four consecutive matches as he clinched the fifth point to give St. Mary's the win with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles over senior Timothy Birch (Sandy, Utah/Brighton).

Hardesty also stretched his win streak to four with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles over first-year Pradeep Ravisankar (Chennai, India/Bhavans Rajaji Vidyashram).

Angerbauer was the only double-winner for the Knights as he registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over Paulishak at No. 4 singles.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, April 3 when St. Mary's welcomes Goucher College to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a non-conference match at 3:30 pm.
