Seahawk Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Wesley

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team notched its second consecutive victory for their first win streak of the season with a 17-4 Capital Athletic Conference triumph over the visiting Wesley College Wolverines Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks (5-6, 1-1 CAC) scored a season-high 17 goals as 13 players found the back of the net while Wesley's four goals were a season-low by one of St. Mary's opponents this year.

Senior attacker Emily Shafer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) led the charge with two goals and two assists while fellow attacker Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) added two and one. Senior midfielder Amelia Tenberg (Manchester, Md./Hereford) and first-year attacker Ashley Lawrence (Annapolis, Md./Spalding) each scored twice.

St. Mary's opened up the game with an 8-0 run before senior midfielder Jessica Franklin (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) helped Wesley (3-7, 0-4 CAC) avoid the shutout with an unassisted tally at 8:41. First-year midfielders Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) and Claire McGagh (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) each picked up a goal as the Seahawks headed into halftime with a 10-1 advantage.

Franklin and senior attacker Jen Jacobs (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) paced Wesley with two goals each while junior midfielder Tristin Burris (Camden, Del./Polytech) scooped up three ground balls and junior defender Jordan Lutz (Collingswood, N.J./Collingswood) won two draw controls.

St. Mary's rattled off three straight to start off the second half before back-to-back free position goals by Franklin and Jacobs made it 13-3 at 13:55. Lawrence and Bishop then scored for the Seahawks before Jacobs put in Wesley's final goal of the day at 4:46. First-year midfielder Brynn Miller (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and junior defender Sarah Harnish (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) netted St. Mary's final two goals.

Sophomore defender Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) collected four caused turnovers, three draw controls and three ground balls to pace the Seahawks in those categories.

Sophomore Michelle DiMenna (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep), first-year Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel), and sophomore Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) combined for eight saves in the win while senior Alyssa Batty (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) recorded 14 saves, including 11 in the first half.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Tuesday, April 2 when the Seahawks travels to Washington, D.C. to take on The Catholic University of America in non-conference action at 6:00 pm.
